Turtle Island is a Native American Indian term referring to
Mother Earth. They believed that the world was carried through
the universe on the back of a great serpent, that being the
turtle. Here at Turtle Island Café we believe that everyone
has a basic right to gastronomic pleasure and consequently the
responsibility to protect the heritage of the food, tradition
and culture that make this pleasure possible. Our thoughts are
based upon the concept of eco-gastronomy – recognition of the
strong connections between plate and planet. Food should be
good, clean and fair. The food that we eat should taste good; it
should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the
environment, animal welfare or our health; and food producers
should receive fair compensation for their work. We consider
ourselves co-producers because by being informed about how and
where our food is produced and actively supporting those who
produce it, we become a part and a partner in the production
process. Here at Turtle Island Café we make every effort to use
local farmers that practice sustainable methods and with our
same beliefs for their produce, cheeses, dairy and meats. Our
fish and seafood purchased is only wild caught and of
sustainable species. Remember we will become what we eat. Turtle Island Café is owned and operated by
the husband and wife team, Chef David Martin and Mimi Lane. Their goal is to provide fabulous food in a casual
and friendly environment. David Martin as a high honours
graduate from the Culinary Institute of America has over 20
years experience as a Chef in the restaurant business creating
unique and flavourful dishes. For more information about Chef
David Martin click on the
